How Adding Up Miles (and Missed Calls) Made Me Reset for an Even Better Second Half

If you are anything like me, you can find a lot of ways to procrastinate. This afternoon, I was supposed to be making phone calls to prospects, and instead, I thought it would be a good idea to add up my running mileage to see if I was on track to reach my goal of running 1,000 miles in 2025.

The good news? I am.

The bad news? I did not make one single phone call. Sigh. And this is despite the inspiration I got from my running calendar this morning (see photo).

So here we are: It’s almost July 2—halfway day.

It’s the perfect moment to pause, take a breath, and reflect on what you’ve planted so far this year—and, in my case, to remember that “planting” doesn’t just mean the fun stuff, like tracking miles. It’s also the less-exciting-but-crucial stuff, like, well… dialing the phone.

Consider this your gentle nudge to zoom out and look at the big picture. Before you drown in another to-do list—or find more “very important” distractions like color-coding your pantry—ask yourself:

  • What’s working well? Celebrate those wins! You’ve earned them—even if it’s just that you didn’t throw your phone out the window yet.

  • What can improve? Be honest. Where are you slacking? Where am I slacking? (Spoiler: the phone calls.)

  • What’s next? Get real about what needs to happen to end the year strong. Set priorities, make a plan—and maybe hide the mileage calendar if it’s too tempting.

And don’t keep this to yourself. Share your reflections with your team, your running buddy, or your dog—whoever keeps you accountable.

What you plant now, you’ll harvest later. So put the work in—even if that means actually making the calls tomorrow. I’ll be right there with you.
