I Could Use Your Help with My Midyear Goal Check-In

July 2 is Halfway Day, the midpoint of the year. It is a natural time to pause, look back, and recalibrate before the second half picks up speed. And we all know it does…one minute you’re enjoying watermelon and fireworks, and the next minute someone asks if you have started your Christmas shopping.

So, this year, I decided to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. I pulled out the worksheet I completed at the beginning of the year, which thankfully was still where I put it.

The one big goal I had set for myself was to build my Guiding Leader concept into a fully developed program and create an outline for a book. The good news is that I made real progress.

In April, I delivered the Guiding Leader program as a keynote for the Bank Holding Company Association’s Spring Seminar. The response was encouraging and reinforced my commitment to keep developing the concept.

The Guiding Leader idea focuses on a shift many professionals need to make as they grow in their careers: moving from being the hero who has all the answers to becoming the guide who helps others find direction, confidence, and ownership.

Here are three simple ways to do your own midyear leadership check-in:

  • First, review your goals honestly. What is working? What has stalled? What needs to change?

  • Second, adjust your priorities. Instead of doubling down on doing everything, refocus your energy where it matters most.

  • Third, communicate updates clearly. Get your team aligned now so they don’t drift through Q3 and Q4.

For the second half of the year, I am choosing to focus my energy on turning the Guiding Leader concept into a clear book outline, listening to the questions real professionals are asking, and building something that is useful beyond the stage.

That is the point of a midyear check-in. Forget about feeling guilty over what did not happen. Instead, notice what has happened, decide what matters next, and lead the rest of the year with greater intention.
