The AI Leadership Pop Quiz You Didn’t Study For

Pop quiz time.

We’ve all been hearing about AI and how it’s going to radically change work. You’re leading a team. How do you respond?

A. Pretend you didn’t see the memo and hope AI quietly moves on to bother another department.

B. Run into the room like you’re Chicken Little yelling, “The sky is falling!” and then provide absolutely no guidance for your team.

C. Roll out a 47-step AI policy by Friday and expect instant compliance.

D. None of the above.

If you chose D, congratulations—you’re on the right track. As a team leader, you should be concerned about AI and the downsizing, role changes, and skill gaps that will likely occur because of it. BUT…

Uncertainty does not give you permission to disappear, panic, or control every move. It gives you an opportunity to lead.

And no, that doesn’t mean you need to have all the answers. If anything, trying to look like you do is a fast track to losing credibility.

Here’s how to lead through uncertainty.

  • Share what you know. Even partial clarity is better than silence.

  • Admit what you don’t. Saying “I don’t know yet” builds trust. It also prevents the office rumor mill from becoming your unofficial spokesperson.

  • Reaffirm what’s steady. In times of change, people need anchors. What’s not changing? What still matters? Say it out loud.

Uncertainty isn’t going anywhere (sorry), and neither should calm, clear leadership. When the path ahead is still being figured out, be the kind of leader who guides people forward with confidence.
